Baseball update 1.24.09

One week. One week from tomorrow, our season begins.

We got on the field yesterday and saw some live arms for the first time in over a week. That was much-needed, allowing many of us to start shaking off the unavoidable rust that comes with one’s first few times seeing live pitching after a long period away from it.

Today I felt we all showed marked progress. While I didn’t have my best day personally, we were fortunate to get the practice in at all considering it was sprinkling already when we got out there at noon and the forecast projected a downpour within the hour, which never arrived. We got plenty of reps on the field. Really feel like our team is beginning to come along nicely. Hopefully the rain will continue to abate throughout this week, because we’re all sick of practicing in a gym with white walls and wood floors rather than on our masterfully manicured Nixon Field.

On a personal level, I wasn’t satisfied with the way my practice went but was pleased to end strong. Really struggled early in practice with my swing. Coach has me making a couple of adjustments that haven’t been the most comfortable — they’ve come and gone as far as being efficient for me, and early in practice I was letting myself overanalzye things too much. Then I made the mistake of carrying it over into my defense, and while I felt good about my blocking and receiving, did not throw as accurately as I can and should.

But when we had our second go-around hitting on the field the swing fell into place. I allowed myself to simply loosen up and take some hacks, and the adjustments  needed to make started clicking the way I’ve been wanting. Now just need to dial up increased consistency, but I am feeling great about next Sunday. As far as my throwing goes, I should be good to go from here on out. Always takes me a day or two on the field to get my rhythm down with all of that, and this disrupted practice schedule has been an aggravating one to adapt to for myself personally and for everyone on the team I’m sure.

But we’re going to be good this year. Can’t wait to get started.
